EIKONES
What is iconic?
How do we respond to icons- emotionally, spiritually and mythologically?
Photo media artist, Stelios Papadakis, seduced by his Greek Orthodox religion, has reconstructed the eikona for his latest exhibition.
EIKONES comes from the ancient Greek word for images.
Metaphorically, EIKONES can also mean the descriptions, we make about what we see. In ancient times it referred to a description of any thing, person, or experience.
For Stelios, this body of work is an exploration of ekphrasis; he illuminates the essence of traditional iconography for a more diverse audience, reflective of twenty-first century values, fads and enquiry.
Stelios' unique ability to fuse photography with painting makes his work quite distinct from other photographic artists.
His images represent a personal and cultural journal of healing and renewal as both an artist and individual.
He began photographing raw digital portraits with studio lighting, and then used both post production techniques, along with his painting skills to create a theatrical, and more mythological feel.
"People find my work very dark and disturbing, and others find it quite erotic and empowering, but its most rewarding when my work evokes strong personal associatoins of a surreal, distant memory," says Stelios.
EIKONES is a free exhibition
